  • Ritipanna is the Sinhalese term for stilt fishing, which is a traditional method for fishing practiced by most fishermen along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This art is popularly seen in areas such as Ahangama, Koggala, Welipenna, Kathaluwa and Thalarambe. A narrow pole is tied to a stick that is anchored on the sea bed. Fisher folk climb onto this stick and settle on the pole for a few hours in an effort to catch some fish. Fishermen found on stilts are those who do not have access to sophisticated equipment for fishing. These men can make a living simply with the help of two wooden poles to make a stilt. One pole is nailed onto the sea bed and the other is placed like a cross bar and acts as a plank for the fishermen to sit on. Each stilt can accommodate only one fisherman. For catching fish, they create a rod made of Kithul, and a small plastic bag is tied around their waist to hold the fish that they catch. With one hand they hold onto the stilt and with the other they hold the rod that catches fish. The tradition of stilt fishing will always be practiced by those who cannot afford to invest in modern fishing equipment. #likealocal

We absolutely loved our stay at the Sandhya and it is definitely a place we want and long to come back to. The design is very Scandinavian and we like the colors, materials and vibe that brings along. The breakfast is good, the service is good, they make very nice dinner and cocktails too! The view of the ocean is breathtaking from all rooms. This is a place we're there is attention to ALL little details. Such as cushions on the sunbeds, fresh beach towels, your room is made twice a day, water in your room and all the staff we met were so nice. I love it!

Beautiful property on great stretch of Kabalana beach. It was really nice walking along the long stretch of beach and having a dip in the warm and clear water. The king size bedroom was big, clean and very comfortable. The pool area was relaxing with comfortable sun beds with a great view of the beach and also direct access. We enjoyed eating lunch at the pool area with some of the best king prawns we had, deep fried in panko breadcrumbs. Everything we had for lunch and breakfast was good quality and value. There is also a fantastic restaurant just opposite if you want a change. The personnel were all brilliant, helping whenever they had to, and replenishing cold water bottles when we on our sun beds. We had 2 lovely and memorable nights and would not hesitate to return.

We loved the hotel so much that we extended our stay from the originally booked 3 nights to 10 nights. The staff were beyond wonderful and we felt relaxed and "at home" in the environment. I had not experienced a boutique hotel yet in my travels and after staying at the Sandhya, a boutique hotel would be my first choice. The intimate, relaxed environment was a nice change from the typical large resort. The hotel's design, décor and attention to detail were exceptional, sort of a modern minimalist environment, yet with everything you need. And, you cant beat waking up with full ocean views right out your patio! Wonderful resort, would absolutely recommend and would definitely visit again!

Best hotel I've stayed in period. The photos do not do the Sandhya justice. If you're looking for a quiet beach resort like experience with exceptional service, this is the place. Due to the lower number of rooms compared to other resorts on the coastline, it's much more quiet allowing you ample time to relax and recharge. The staff at the Sandhya have created a seamless relaxation experience for city goers like myself to tune out completely. With gentle waves basically at your doorstep and amazing food & drink menu, I couldn't recommend staying here enough. Definitely on my list to revisit in the future,

A truly unique stay

I came back to Sri Lanka for the first time since the pandemic looking for a place to relax and base myself. The photos of Sandhya looked amazing (note - somehow better in real life) so I booked 7 nights. I was not expecting the simplicity and luxury I found and, with the small number of rooms, equal parts private and communal. I describe this as a modern guesthouse, coupled with barefoot luxury overlooking a pristine surf beach in the Southern District. Dan and his team do a great job making everyone comfortable, well fed and hydrated! The menu is tight but considered, and enough to keep me interested for the duration of my stay. There are a couple of good local places within a few minutes walk if you so wish. By good fortune I met the owner as he passed through on a visit. I always enjoy meeting the person behind the property, and Alan was a pleasure. Will I be back? Absolutely. The sheer easiness of all this space offers makes it a no-brainer.

We stayed 3 nights at The amazing Sandhya, and we absolutely loved it! Great architecture and designer furnitures. The staff where very nice and service minded. The food was good and the atmosphere quite and very comfortable. We immediately felt like “home” here. Would absolutely recommend this hotel if you appreciate great architecture, design, and would love a good spot at the beach :)

The property was all good except the fact that the common areas didn’t have any fan or AC coverage and it was super hot to sit in any of those areas. There was no phones or any communication channel to call the helper staff from the room and you were expected to go around the property looking for a staff.

This is the best place in Ahangama! We had such a beautiful relaxing time. The room, the breakfast (until 12.oooh available!) staff and the direct beach access... everything was fantastic. There are several restaurants in waking distance. Home away from home.

I originally booked in for two nights at The Sandhya—I was sold by the reviews of the hotel but wasn't sure about the beach as some reviews I read said it was too close to the highway. From the moment I arrived, I fell in love with this property and the beach. Everything is done so thoughtfully at The Sandhya—from the awesome service and interior design to the location, and delicious food. The beach is super chill and has a really nice laid-back vibe—the road wasn't an issue at all and the beach is great for walking, swimming, and surfing. My room (#3) was awesome - the view is incredible, it's spotless and the bed and linens are very comfortable. Water is provided and turn-down service is offered each evening. The staff really goes above and beyond while you are staying there and since it's a boutique hotel you really feel like you're being taken care of. I had booked 4 nights in Weligama afterward but cut the stay short to return to The Sandhya! Upon my return, the staff made me an amazing Sri Lankan dinner and when I checked out they gave me a Christmas gift! Super sweet! Breakfast was included in my stay and it was awesome: fruit juice, fresh fruit, toast + jam, and your choice of breakfast with coffee/tea. I also ate dinner there several times and the food was always delicious, well-presented and the service was impeccable! I can't wait to return to The Sandhya and highly recommend it!
