On clear nights enjoy the amazing star-filled sky, the view is simply stunning with no light pollution along the northwest coast of Ireland. Local Area – Achill Island Achill Island, (connected by a land bridge) is situated off the West coast of Ireland in County Mayo. This lovely part of the county is known for its outstanding natural beauty, dramatic cliffs and 5 blue flag beaches and hidden coves.
The rugged landscape lends itself perfectly to a wide variety of outdoor activities including hillwalking up the island's two peaks, Slievemore and Croaghaun, sea angling in the Atlantic and Clew Bay, freshwater fishing in Achill’s many lakes, swimming from any of the stunning beaches and a variety of water sports. It is also a perfect place for surfing enthusiasts.
The Dessert Village in Slievemore consists of almost 100 stone cottages stretching on the southern slopes of Slievemore mountain. This ancient track full of medieval artefacts is a perfect place for a tranquil time and quiet reflection.
Achill Aquarium, part of the Achill Experience is 5 only a minute's drive away, and it is a fabulous treat for the little ones in any weather condition – rain or shine. It consists of 16 tanks presenting you with fish found in Achill waters, along Wild Atlantic Way or even some tropical species from around the world.
The opening of the Great Western Greenway a 42km long track for cyclists, walkers and runners which follows the route of the former Achill to Westport railway line has widened the possibilities for exploring this wonderful place. The Achill end of the Greenway starts at Achill Sound where our holiday homes are located. In 2011 the Great Western Greenway was awarded the EDEN European Destination of Excellence Award for Sustainable Tourism.
If you are travelling during September/October, sign up for the Battle of the lakes, the famous kitesurfing and music festival centred on Keel Lake.
Achill is less than an hour’s drive (50km) from the vibrant town of Westport which has a wide selection of craft shops, traditional pubs and good restaurants. The well-known Croagh Patrick mountain is 8 km from Westport and poses a challenge to any walker though the views from the top are spectacular! There is also a visitors’ centre at the foot of the mountain and adjacent to the National Famine Monument.
