San Diego Travel Guide
San Diego is a city that seems to have been blessed by Mother Nature. Its year-round sunny climate, combined with the beautiful ocean views, pristine sands, excellent surf and locations such as Mission Beach and Pacific Beach put this destination at the top of the list for many visitors from the world over.
Families are well catered for in San Diego. Balboa Park, the largest urban cultural park in America, is perfect for a fun-packed day out. Here you’ll find the San Diego Zoo with its fascinating giant panda exhibit. Hop on the miniature railway for a tour round the park, or catch a puppet show at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. An excursion to SeaWorld never fails to impress. Discover the wonders of the sea with interactive exhibits, breath-taking animal shows and plenty of fun rides.
Balboa Park also has a wealth of attractions for lovers of art and culture within the 1200-acre space. Explore the sixteen museums, including the San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Photographic Arts, or catch a performance at one of the many theatres and venues. You can easily spend the best part of a day simply strolling through the park’s nineteen themed gardens, such as the Alcazar Garden, modelled on the grounds of a Spanish castle.
When you travel to San Diego, you cannot ignore the importance of its naval history. Visit the Aircraft Carrier Museum and clamber aboard the USS Midway, a 296-metre aircraft carrier whose crew once numbered over 4,000. The city also has important ties with aviation. San Diego Air & Space Museum, one of the top flight museums in the US, is located in Balboa Park.
Allow plenty of time to explore San Diego’s vibrant downtown area. The Trolley, a light rail public transport system, stops at many places of interest. The Gaslamp Quarter is famous for its Victorian style, and is the place to head to if you’re looking for cafés and restaurants. North of downtown you’ll find the Old Town San Diego State Park, the place to discover the city’s Spanish origins.
After a busy day’s entertainment, nothing beats watching a Californian sunset over the Pacific Ocean, a true spectacle of nature.
