Queens Park is a relaxing alternative to the busy streets and historic sights of Southampton. Surrounding the park are London plane trees, whose changing colours mark the seasons and lend the park a rural ambiance. The park is home to an important military monument and a rather inventive sculpture.
Spend a few hours relaxing in the park between visits to Southampton’s many attractions. Enjoy a picnic with family and friends against the backdrop of London plane trees, daffodils, well-groomed lawns and elegant English homes. Amble along the paths and among the trees and catch glimpses of cruisers and yachts at the nearby Southampton Docks.
Relax on a bench by the General Gordon Memorial, which commemorates the late British Army officer who led forces in the Crimean War and in China in the 19th century. Nearby, marvel at artist Reece Ingram’s sculpture, Organism No.1, which was made from the stump of a much-loved tree that died in 1996. Capture atmospheric photos of the intriguing statue in front of the setting sun in the evening. Then, follow your nose northwards to the international restaurants along Oxford Street for dinner.
The park’s land is owned by Queen’s College, part of Oxford University, and leased to Southampton Council. Sketches and photos of families enjoying the park date back as far as the 18th century and can be found online.
Queens Park is just to the north of the Test River in the centre of Southampton, near to the Mayflower Park, the Solent Sky Museum and the entrance to the Old City Walls. There are plenty of bus stops in the area.
