Tourist Guide
Nottingham featuring heritage architecture and château or palace
Delve into the legend of Robin Hood and discover connections to Batman in this spirited city, which has played a major role in British industry and folklore.

Nottingham is a historic city surrounded by leafy suburbs and forests. Besides its associations with Robin Hood, the city is also known for its large university, parkland and history of lace production. Trace the city’s evolution through its medieval castle, Victorian warehouses and stylish contemporary art galleries.

Among the most thrilling places to begin your explorations is the Galleries of Justice Museum. Join a guided tour around the former courts, police station and prison with a costumed actor. Hear horrifying tales of the punishments executed in these dungeons.

The museum stands in the Lace Market area in central Nottingham, a hub for lace-making in the 19th century. Admire the tall, red-brick Victorian buildings that served as warehouses during the lace boom. This neighborhood also houses Nottingham Contemporary, an elegant modern art museum that hosts temporary exhibits, many of which offer social commentary on today’s world.

Nearby is St. Mary’s Church, which features impressive stained-glass windows and bronze door engravings. Walk west for 10 minutes to reach Nottingham Castle, which sits atop a hill known as Castle Rock. Inside the 17th-century building is a museum filled with historic relics and an art gallery.

Take a tour with City of Caves and explore the underground passageways of Nottingham. Enjoy a drink at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, a historic pub that is among the oldest in the country. Just west of the city center is Wollaton Hall, a stately mansion that was used to portray Wayne Manor in the 2012 Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises.

Fly to East Midlands Airport and rent a car for the 25-minute drive north to Nottingham. Nottingham-bound trains depart from St. Pancras International in London the journey takes less than 2 hours. Use the city’s acclaimed tram system and buses to get around town.

Medieval legends combine with modern restaurants, shops and art galleries in this dynamic city.

Nottingham is built with hundreds of sandstone caves under the city. The cave trip is worth a visit. There is a huge amount of construction going on including refurbishment of the Castle and much of it will not be ready until 2021.

If you have a car make sure you head over to Woolsthorpe Manor which is Isaac Newton's home. You can see the apple tree that inspired his reasoning of gravity and changed how we see the world
