The Munttoren (Mint Tower) is one of the chief attractions of Muntplein. This Renaissance-style clock tower is a national monument, and people gather around every fifteen minutes to hear the 38-bell carillon play its charming tune. The lower level of the tower once formed part of a gate in the medieval city wall, which was destroyed by fire in 1618. The clock tower with its tuneful carillon was added in the 17th century, around the same time the building was used for producing coins, hence its name.In 1885, the old guard house under the tower became a shop selling traditional Delfts Blauw porcelain. The Royal Delft Experience Amsterdam multimedia tour chronicles the history of this typical blue and white china with its familiar pastoral views and demonstrates some of the fascinating techniques that have been used in its production for centuries. Afterwards you can purchase a pretty memento of your visit from the well-stocked shop.Muntplein also offers numerous opportunities for a pleasant stroll through some of Amsterdam’s pretty backwaters. The nearby Singel canal is the site of the famous floating Flower Market, or head along the Amstel River towards the photogenic Magere Brug – an especially picturesque sight at night when its graceful arches are illuminated. Relax with a beer and a snack at adjacent Rembrandtplein, pausing along the way to admire the historic Art Deco Tuschinski cinema, or check out the English-language film programme at its modern neighbour, Pathé de Munt. Or, if you dare, you could get your kicks in the terrifying Torture Museum.Muntplein is easily reached on foot from Dam Square along Kalverstraat, the city’s longest shopping street, or by bus or tram from Central Station. Parking can be difficult in this congested central district so, if you have a car, why not leave it at one of the park-and-ride sites on the edge of the city and use public transport to get around? Finally, remember that trams have right of way over pedestrians here, so take extra care when crossing the road.
