What better displays Guangzhou's vision and image of itself than a 600-metre high TV tower? Dominating the city skyline, the tower stands at the intersection of Guangzhou’s new urban central and the Pearl River scenery zone and attracts plenty of visitors. The towering landmark has a distinct curved and narrow appearance which has given rise to the building's nickname of Xiao Man's waist. This refers to a famous Geisha, known for her slim waist, who used to entertain people during the Tang Dynasty. At its narrowest point, the diameter of the tower is only 30 metres wide. Visitors can buy a ticket and head up the tower to its open-air observation deck, and there are also several expensive restaurants and other entertainment facilities to discover in the clouds. The observation deck is though the main draw but if it's two crowded, there are two more on lower levels. Once you've spent some time admiring the 360-degree views over the city and its surrounds, the brave can try the world's 'highest' Ferris wheel. Passengers can ride in see-through capsules perched on top of the tower and will be pleased to know that the pods have been built to resist 8-magnitude earthquakes and Beaufort scale 12 typhoons. If that wasn't thrilling enough, you can go outside the building on the Spider Walk, an open-air staircase between floors 32 and 64. Obviously not for people with vertigo, the staircase has transparent steps which makes for some good photo opportunities. If you need a break from all that excitement, there is a café and two revolving restaurants. Admission prices to Canton Tower depend on how high you want to go. Canton Tower is accessible by subway or one of several bus routes. Chigang Pagoda Station on Subway Line 3 is connected to the structure by an underpass. The tower is open daily.
