We had a great time here. A nice spacious room and bathroom, large bed, we got upgraded to a sea view. The main thing that amazed me was the value for money we experienced. For a 4 star hotel at the rates we got I was really impressed.
The only things that I'd mark the hotel down on are the distance to the beach (it's a 20 minute walk up a hill back from the beach - which is fine at first but by the end of the holiday was a bit of a drag) and the breakfast (and breakfast staff) which was fairly average.
But I would recommend this hotel to anyone. I thought it was great.
We stayed here for a week in September 2014. We were delighted with out room which was clean, spacious and overlooked the pool. The hotel itself is small and well staffed, the pool is clean and there are planty of sunbeds. The pool bar however was not open during our stay. The restaurant was delicious, however it is quite expensive and is very rich food - good for a treat! The bar itself is good, if a little expensive (a tip - the wine if E3.50 a small glass but abottle is only E10!) but you get snacks with your drinks. Lots of comments are around the dissappointing breakfast - we were prepared for a terrible breakfast! But it was fine, your standard continental breakfast - you get what you pay for remember!
There is a lovely pizzerias just down the road (not open mondays or tuesdays) which is popular, cheap and wonderful food! There is a supermarket around the corner which is good for stocking up on water and snacks. Beaches are nearby. We had a car, there is plenty parking accross from the hotel, and it was very useful as the hotel is a little out in the sticks, but I believe the public transport is easy and reliable and cheap.
One comment - Expedia flew us to Cagliari airport which was at the other end of the island and a LONG drive - there is an aiport ten mins from the hotel! We assumed Expedia would have flown us to the nearest hotel and we were dissppointed in this, but will know for next time.
"good place to stay before catching a flight home"
Great place to stay before catching a flight from Olbia airport. You can't get lost in the morning as you can see the planes from the hotel ( though it isn't too noisy).. Lovely pool to cool off in after a long drive, restaurant looks great but we opted for the cheaper pizza place across the road. You could walk to the airport in ten minutes from here. Reception happy to print off boarding passes - computers for guest use in reception at no extra charge.
Really good breakfast buffet.
The hotel is located directly across from the ferry landing but didn't bother us as the ferries stop about midnight. The staff at the hotel were wonderful. The continental breakfast offered quite a variety of items including scrambled eggs and bacon, fruits, cereal, and fresh pastries. The refrigerator in the room left something to be desired (even after turning it down.) The room itself was clean and neat. The shower would've been better if there was a bracket for the hand held wand located above your head and not at your waist; as it's difficult to escape the rain showerhead when turned on. All in all, we would highly recommend Hotel Excelsior to anybody visiting La Maddalena.
"For the views alone, this is the hotel to choose..."
From the moment you walk through the doors to this charming hotel, the friendly staff are there to do everything they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. My mother and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Our room was cosy, spotlessly clean and well maintained; the decor was delightfully Sardinian. Our view was incredible, especially at sunsets. The restaurant was excellent and such professional service; well the Manager had worked at The Savoy in London. The food was delicious and plentiful and the views from the Terrace of the Marina and the mountains in the distance was the perfect back drop. Busy during the day with all the yachts and boats coming and going below, but in the evening romantic because of the pink sunsets over the mountainous landscape. There was ample space to relax in the lounges and bar terrace, and we loved the charm of the interior design which was both rustic and sophisticated. Down by the pool we had a Pool Bar which offered refreshments and snacks throughout the day. There was also a Life Guard in attendance throughout the day. All in all for the area this hotel offers five star service at great prices;it certainly was as good as the five star hotel we had just left in Alghero! We would definitely revisit this lovely hotel.
Hotel is in great location overlooking Porto Cervo Marina and offers great views over the area. Interior of hotel is beautifully furnished in local style. Staff are lovely and welcoming. Great place to use as a base for day trips to beaches and other cities, enjoy and unwind.

This boutique hotel offers great accommodations, perfect location for walking to local points of interest and driving out of town, a five-minute (easy) drive to the port to take the ferry, varied breakfast food and very nice, helpful staff. What more could anyone ask for? This hotel offers close, private parking for a small fee. In an historical area, this is amazing. The staff made reservations for us to take a boat trip to the Maddalena islands embarking from a town a short distance from Olbia.
