What you can expect

Begin your adventure with a visit to Jozani Forest, a 50-square-kilometer area that comprises groundwater forest, coastal forest, grassland, mangroves, and salt marsh. Walk through this impressive flora and fauna, home to a wide variety of mammals, birds, and butterflies.

Spot the unique red colobus monkeys, known for their friendly nature and distinctive appearance. Learn about their diet, which consists only of green and young fruits and vegetables. Keep an eye out for other forest species like the dik-dik, elephant shrew, and chameleons.

Next, visit the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre, a community project aimed at protecting endangered species of butterflies. Set in 5000 square feet of beautiful gardens, the centre offers the opportunity to see butterflies up close, feed them, and learn about their fascinating life cycle.

Then, head to a reptile park to see Aldabra giant tortoises, snakes, chameleons, and more. Enjoy delicious Swahili snacks or local fruits before concluding your tour at a small local market near Jozani Forest.

Finally, After exploring the Reptile park, the adventure continues to the mangrove ecosystem of Chwaka Bay, one of the most important coastal habitats on the island. Here, you will board a traditional wooden boat for a serene mangrove discovery cruise through winding natural channels surrounded by dense mangrove trees. These mangroves play a crucial role in protecting the coastline, preventing erosion, and serving as breeding grounds for fish, crabs, and other marine life.

As the boat glides slowly through the calm waters, you will experience the peaceful beauty of this unique environment. The mangrove roots rise from the water in intricate patterns, creating a stunning natural landscape that feels almost magical. Along the way, your guide will explain how mangrove forests support marine ecosystems and protect local fishing communities.
