What you can expect

Depart from Calgary in the morning and begin your full-day adventure with a scenic drive through the rolling foothills of southern Alberta. Sit back and relax in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle as you watch the landscape transform from prairie to rugged mountain terrain. Along the way, your knowledgeable guide will share interesting insights about the region’s history, geology, and natural wonders.

Your first stop is the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel, one of the most photographed landmarks in the Canadian Rockies. Perched dramatically on a hilltop overlooking Upper Waterton Lake, this historic hotel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Spend about 30 minutes exploring the grounds and capturing postcard-perfect photos.

Next, head down into Waterton Townsite, a charming lakeside village nestled within the park. You’ll have approximately 60 minutes here to wander the scenic shoreline, browse local boutiques and cafés, or enjoy a quick snack. From here, you’ll also have the opportunity to take an optional Waterton Lake Cruise, which offers stunning views of the lake’s glacial waters, towering cliffs, and possibly even wildlife. The cruise typically lasts around 1–1.5 hours and is not included in the tour price, but tickets can be purchased on-site (subject to availability and seasonal operation).

After the town and lake visit, continue to Cameron Falls, just a short drive away. These cascading waters, flowing over billion-year-old rock, are a beautiful and tranquil stop. Enjoy about 15 minutes here taking in the natural setting and grabbing a few memorable photos.

From there, venture to Red Rock Canyon, one of the park’s most vibrant geological sites. Known for its striking red and green layered rock formations set against lush alpine scenery, this stop allows for a 30-minute walk along the canyon trail or a peaceful rest beside the flowing creek.

The final stop of the day is Buffalo Paddock, a protected area where you may catch sight of wild bison grazing on the open plains. Spend about 15 minutes observing these majestic animals from a distance while your guide shares information about their history and role in prairie ecosystems.

If Buffalo Paddock is not accessible, the itinerary will instead include a visit to Okotoks Big Rock, a massive glacial erratic located west of the town of Okotoks. Here, you'll spend about 15 minutes learning about this fascinating geological marvel, which was carried by ice across vast distances during the last Ice Age.

After a full day of exploration, scenic stops, and natural beauty, return to Calgary in the evening, filled with lasting memories from one of Canada's most stunning national parks.
