The trek on Vulcano, the island after which all volcanoes are named, is a short but highly evocative hike, suitable for those with a basic level of hiking experience.
It begins with a direct pick-up from the Port of Milazzo, and you arrive comfortably on the island of Vulcano, where the hike will start.
The most popular route leads to the Gran Cratere Della Fossa: it starts near the port and follows a well-marked path with a sandy and rocky surface. The ascent takes about 45–60 minutes, with an elevation gain of approximately 350–400 metres. The hike is not technically demanding, but it can be strenuous due to the sun and the lack of shade.
Along the route, you will encounter active fumaroles and areas with a strong smell of sulphur. Once at the top, you can walk along the rim of the crater and enjoy a sweeping view of all the Liparian Islands.
The descent takes approximately 30–40 minutes. In total, the hike lasts approximately 2–3 hours. This is one of the most iconic experiences in the area, ideal for those who want to see an active volcano up close without tackling routes that are too long or too technically demanding.
