PART ONE: Experience at Rocca Calascio Castle. When medieval history combines with the fantasy of a film, the result is a magical atmosphere. What was once a castle consisting of the fortress itself and the adjacent medieval village at an altitude of 1,464 metres became an ideal set for the film “Ladyhawke.”
The strategic position of Rocca Calascio between the Campo Imperatore plateau (the set of many films, including “They Call Me Trinity”) and the lower plateaus of Navelli (famous for its saffron) and Tirino offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramas.
Due to its thoroughly medieval character, it was chosen as the setting for famous films other than Ladyhawke (starring Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer), including My Friends – Act II, La Piovra 7, and The American (starring G. Clooney).
The visit to the small medieval village is suitable for everyone, but to reach the fortress, you need to be a good hiker (what could be described as a short climb over rocks is not recommended for people who are too old).
In summer, cars CANNOT drive up to the gates of the village but must be parked in the town of Calascio, where a PAID shuttle service run by the municipality is provided.
The excursion to the village is suitable for everyone. Visiting the fortress is recommended only for those in good physical condition.
N.B. The visit cannot take place if it rains 1 or 2 days before the date of the visit, due to the slippery nature of the route up to the fortress. Full refunds will be issued in these cases.
PART TWO: Experience in the medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessani, the “Medici” outpost among the peaks of Abruzzo. This is by far one of the most picturesque villages in Abruzzo, located at an altitude of 1,250 metres in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is nestled among the highest peaks in Abruzzo in a truly unique natural setting, with a panorama that is often referred to as the “Tibet” of Abruzzo. The village was fortified by the famous Medici family of Florence and has been preserved almost intact as it was in the 14th century. The village is entirely built of white limestone, whose whiteness has been dulled by the passage of time.
Slowly, with a non-touristy approach, we will enter the village through its narrow medieval alleyways to experience a moment suspended in time, enveloped in a fairytale atmosphere. Along the way, we will come across “shops” run by artisans, where we can spend time surrounded by intoxicating scents and colours.
OPTIONAL: The traditions and flavours of Abruzzo.
At lunchtime, you can sample local products, such as cheeses produced just a few kilometres away, cured meats, bread and baked goods, accompanied by a glass of Abruzzo wine. Select the option before completing your booking.
