What you can expect
Begin your tour at Corso Lorenzo Fazzini, right in front of the Town Hall. Wind through narrow, picturesque alleys adorned with whitewashed houses and glimpses of the Adriatic Sea.
Make your first stop at the famous Love Staircase (Scalinata dell’Amore), where the steps display the lyrics of Max Gazzè’s song “The Legend of Pizzomunno and Cristalda.” According to modern folklore, couples who walk the staircase together will remain united forever, earning Vieste the nickname “City of Love.” It’s an unforgettable stop for romantic photos and a unique blend of history, music, and local legend.
Next, explore the Cathedral of Saint Maria Assunta, an 11th-century architectural jewel in the heart of Vieste’s historic centre. The exterior impresses with its austere stone façade, Romanesque arches, and simple yet elegant details. Inside, the marble altar, ceiling frescoes, and religious paintings offer a glimpse into the town’s spiritual heritage, making the cathedral a cultural and historical landmark.
Continue to the Castle Svevo-Aragonese, majestically set on a triangular plan overlooking the sea and currently guarded by the Italian Navy. Its massive stone walls, corner towers, and fortified bastions tell the storey of Vieste’s strategic importance through the centuries. Walk along its ramparts and admire panoramic views of the cliffs and coastline, while imagining life in this historical fortress.
From here, head to the nearby sandy beach and the iconic Pizzomunno monolith, towering 25 metres above the sea. This natural landmark divides the beach into two coves and dominates the landscape with its striking presence. According to local legend, young fisherman Pizzomunno was turned to stone by jealous sirens in love with the beautiful Cristalda, giving birth to a romantic tale that has captivated generations.
Conclude your tour at the Trabucco di Punta San Francesco, one of the most emblematic structures of Gargano’s maritime tradition. This wooden fishing platform, suspended over the water and equipped with long arms supporting large nets, reveals the centuries-old art of local fishing. Surrounded by the sound of waves and the sea breeze, admire the trabucco’s impressive construction and enjoy a final panoramic view of the Adriatic and Vieste’s dramatic cliffs, leaving with unforgettable memories of this coastal paradise.
