Overview

  • Twante is a short drive from Yangon, yet life there moves at a different pace. Rice fields and farmland surround the town, and its pottery workshops still work the way they did generations ago.

    Your private guide and driver cross the Yangon River on the new Yangon-Dala Bridge, with views back over the river to the Shwedagon skyline. In the Oh-Bo pottery quarter, you meet the artisans and learn first-hand how they make their wares.

    After lunch at a local restaurant, visit Shwe San Daw Pagoda. At 75 metres high, its design recalls Shwedagon and, like other pagodas of the same name, it is said to hold hairs of the Buddha, yet it sees far fewer visitors.

Twante Township

The journey begins with a drive across the spectacular new Yangon-Dala Bridge by enjoying a panoramic 360-degree view of the Yangon River, and the Shwedagon Pagoda skyline. Heading to Twante, this sleepy village has retained much of its traditional charm and it is surrounded by sprawling rice fields and farmland. Here we experience rural life and visit a traditional pottery workshop at Oh-Bo Pottery Quarter, where methods have remained the same for generations. We can meet some of the talented artisans and learn first-hand how they make their wares.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we head to one of the main reasons why Twante is just a destination in its own right. The auspicious name of Shwe San Daw (“Golden Hair Relic”) shares its name with several other pagodas across Myanmar all said to contain hairs of the Buddha, yet the Twante version is one of the lesser-known ones. With a design similar to that of Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon, the 75-metre high the Shwe San Daw Pagoda has taken a more subdued on-the-background position for Buddhist worshippers.

We wrap up the day with a relaxing drive along the Twante Canal, dug during the British colonial era to link Yangon, observe the vibrant river life, colourful wooden boats transporting local produce. We then return to Yangon through idyllic villages, alongside paddy fields and river landscapes. Transfer back to your hotel.
