Set out on a memorable 7-day canoe adventure through the picturesque Altmühltal, perfect for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of nature, activity, and local culture. Your river holiday begins in Treuchtlingen, where you’ll receive your canoe, paddles, safety gear, and a waterproof container. After a thorough introduction and paddling briefing, you’ll embark on an 81-kilometer journey that winds through lush valleys, dramatic rock formations, and historic towns.
The first leg takes you to Pappenheim, where a medieval castle overlooks the river, and on to Solnhofen. Here, you can spend your first two nights at the INSEL CAMP, with the option to explore the MÜHLENWIRT and enjoy a live concert on Wednesdays. Take a recommended pause day to visit the Fossilienmuseum or try your hand at fossil hunting in the local quarry. As you continue, paddle past Hammermühle and Hagenacker’s rock formations, then overnight in Dollnstein or Breitenfurt.
After another scenic stretch, reach Eichstätt, a historic bishop’s city ideal for a rest day. Explore the Willibaldsburg and the Jura Museum, or simply wander the old town. On the penultimate day, glide past the Roman fort Vetoniana near Pfünz before arriving in Gungolding or Kipfenberg for your final night. The last day leads you to Kinding, with a recommended stop at Burg Kipfenberg and its Roman and Bavarian museum.
Throughout your journey, you’ll navigate 10 portages (with 2 passable weirs), enjoy riverside picnics, and have plenty of opportunities for spontaneous stops at beer gardens or for a swim. The tour ends at the Rastplatz – Zeltplatz an der Römerbrücke in Kinding, where you return your canoe and equipment by 16:30 on the seventh day. Accommodation is not included, but suggestions and booking tips are provided for each night along the route.
