What you can expect

Picture this: A turquoise gem hidden at 13,780 feet

Okay, real talk—this tour starts early (we're talking 4 AM pickup), but trust me, it's SO worth those precious hours of sleep you're sacrificing. You'll spend about 3 hours winding through the Andes in the pre-dawn darkness, until you reach the tiny village of Mollepata for a hearty breakfast.

The hike that humbles everyone (in the best way)

Here's where it gets real. The hike to Humantay Lake is only about 1.5 hours uphill, but at nearly 4,200 metres. One traveller described it perfectly: “Like walking up stairs for 45 minutes straight.” You'll take frequent breaks (everyone does), moving slowly with the altitude, but your guide is incredibly patient. The steep incline hits you fast, but the views of towering Salkantay Mountain (20,574 feet of snow-capped magnificence) make every breathless step worthwhile.

And yes, horses are available for about 30 USD - 80 PEN if you're struggling—though they can only take you 80 percent of the way.

That moment when you crest the hill

Then suddenly—BAM—the lake appears. And it's honestly unreal. This impossibly vibrant turquoise-blue water, fed directly by the Humantay Glacier towering above, surrounded by white peaks and waterfalls cascading down from ancient ice. The colour comes from glacial minerals and microalgae creating this otherworldly glow that seems photoshopped but isn't. On sunny mornings during dry season (May-October), it's almost electric blue.

The experience beyond the Instagram shot

Here's what makes this special: it's sacred. Local guides often conduct a coca leaf ceremony, teaching you to place three leaves as an offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the mountain spirits. You'll build a small stone tower—an apacheta—while making a wish. It's a centuries-old Andean tradition, and experiencing it at this ethereal spot is genuinely moving.
