What you can expect
Discover the beauty and magic of Tiritiri Matangi Island on this day trip from Auckland. Explore the island by foot on numerous walking tracks, see native bird species, visit the lighthouse and relax on the island's beaches.
In the morning, make your way to Pier 4, the Ferry Terminal, hop on board the ferry and depart to beautiful Tiritiri Matangi Island. Tiritiri Matangi (translates to “tossed by the wind”) is an open scientific reserve allowing only 150 visitors daily.
From the moment you step onto the island you're amazed by the lush native plant species. See rare birds in their natural and protected environment. Take a walk on the Kawerau Track and marvel at the island's oldest Pohutukawa trees, estimated to be over 800 years old. Hear the Kokariki or Stitchbird singing as you stroll through the forest setting.
Then break at Hobbs Beach for a picnic or a swim in the refreshing ocean. Pass by the penguin nesting boxes situated above the beach and catch a glimpse of the island's little native blue penguins. Take a guided walk with supporters of the island. If you're lucky, spot Kokako birds, famous for their enchanting songs.
