What you can expect
Built in 1752, the Schönbrunn Zoo of Vienna is officially the world's oldest zoo. With its emphasis on species conservation and education – and its immaculately preserved baroque-style architecture and new modern additions – it is an exemplary zoo that many others aim to emulate.
Originally built as a private menagerie for the Schönbrunn Palace and its royal inhabitants, the zoo has retained its regal atmosphere, and despite being extended many times to house an ever-growing list of species, the harmony between the natural world and the modern age is prevalent.
The zoo is of particular significance as it's one of very few worldwide to house giant pandas. See these four pandas, along with more than 4,000 animals, ranging from elephants and giraffes to sea lions and penguins.
Enjoy the daily feedings, where you can learn a little more about the animals and the conservation work the zoo is continually working on. Enjoy a bite to eat at one of many restaurants or picnic areas throughout the zoo.
