What you can expect

  • We will begin our guided tour from the city of Neiva, heading to the municipality of Villa Vieja. After approximately an hour's journey by private transport, we will arrive at the main park of this town, where we will take a tour to see the Chapel of Santa Bárbara, a national monument, and its colonial houses, including the Casona, where the Liberator Simón Bolívar stayed. In the centre of the park, we will find a scale replica of the Megaterium, a mammal that inhabited these lands more than 5 to 10 million years ago.
Later, we head to the Tatacoa Desert. We begin our tour by visiting the Cardón vantage point. Later, we arrive at the Rainbow Trail or the Cuzco Trail, where we enter on foot along a guided path, discovering all its secrets and observing its fauna and flora. We finish this tour and arrive at a tourist inn where we can hydrate.
There, the transport will pick us up again and take us to the typical desert restaurant El Cabrito, where we will have a business lunch.
After lunch, the transport will pick us up again, and we will take a panoramic tour of different attractions and formations in the desert, such as the Puerta Sideral, the Zoológica de Arena, and the Valle de los Deseos.
Finally, we will arrive at the Valle de los Xilópalos Trail, where the local guide will lead us on tours inside some deep clay channels and natural caves. Among the most important attractions, we will find: Xilópalos or Evidence of fossilised wood trunks, Water Outcrops, Caves, the “La Señorita” Strait, Experiential Tourism (Doña Ligia's house), (Los González's house), “La Culebra” Trail (channels created by defluvium processes), and the Cave of Time.
From there, the transport will take us to the Rainbow Trail and El Cuzco: one of the most iconic landscapes with the greatest geomorphology in the desert, the “cemetery of fossils,” where the remains of prehistoric animals such as megateria and purussaurus lie. Other places of interest include the “El Cuzco” vantage point – El Estrecho del Cuzco, Estoraque Mayor or “Testigo del Suelo”, Estoraque La Catedral – Cárcavas, Cueva de “El Chulo”, Alto de “El Cardón”, El Ojo del Desierto, and El Árbol del Amor.
Finally, at 7:00 PM, depending on the weather conditions, we will do the last activity of the Astronomical Observation Talk: Recognition of the sky under the direction of astronomer Javier Fernando Rúa Restrepo, who will show us the millions of stars that make up the Milky Way and the different constellations that frame the sky. Through telescopes, we will see details of the moon and some planets. If the weather conditions prevent the activity from taking place, the tourist will receive a full refund of the affected reservation. 8:30 PM - Return to Neiva.
