What you can expect

  • Begin your day at the Humble Administrator’s Garden, Suzhou’s largest and most celebrated classical garden. Covering over 5 hectares, the garden is divided into eastern, central, and western sections. The central part, with the Far-View Hall overlooking a lotus-filled lake, is the heart of the composition. The western section features the exquisite 36-Mandarin-Duck Pavilion, while the eastern part offers a more open, rustic landscape. Every pavilion, rockery, and reflection has been carefully placed to create a “painting in motion.” Take your time to capture the seasonal beauty.

Right outside the garden gate, your traditional three-wheeled rickshaw awaits. For the next 40 minutes, your local driver will pedal you through the labyrinth of narrow lanes that most tourists never see. Peek into quiet courtyards, spot century-old wellheads, and watch daily life unfold behind the iconic “white walls and black tiles,” a vivid contrast to the formal elegance of the garden.

Arrive at Panmen, the only well-preserved water-land city gate in China and a UNESCO-listed site along the Grand Canal. Climb the ancient city wall (built over 600 years ago) for a panoramic view of the Ruiguang Pagoda and the graceful Wumen Bridge. After exploring the battlements and the canal-side promenade, enjoy a simple lunch at one of the nearby local eateries (your guide will be happy to suggest authentic noodle or dumpling spots).

Board a traditional wooden boat at the Panmen Pier and set sail towards the Bai Juyi Pier. During this 30-minute cruise, see Suzhou’s ancient city walls, stone bridges, and waterside houses from a unique vantage point. Meanwhile, a local Pingtan artist will perform a short set, the soft Shanghainese-style vocals accompanied by the pipa and sanxian are the very soundtrack of the Jiangnan water towns.

Disembark at Bai Juyi Pier, right at the start of the historic Shantang Street. This 3.5-kilometer canal street was excavated by the famous poet Bai Juyi when he served as governor of Suzhou. The restored section nearest the city centre is now a bustling pedestrian lane lined with traditional tea houses, souvenir shops, and small restaurants. Cross the arched bridges, listen to the lapping water, and imagine the bustling trade that once flowed here.

Your day tour concludes at Shantang Street. You are free to continue exploring, enjoy a cup of tea, or make your own way back to your hotel.
