Description

Embark on a tour that follows the rugged and formerly treacherous Skippers Road into Skippers Canyon, an area once swarmed by gold miners trying to find their fortune. Notoriously unsafe in the days of the Gold Rush, the road was hacked by hand into the sheer cliff sides of the Shotover River Valley.

Hop into a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and let an experienced guide navigate the awe-inspiring canyon road while you relax and enjoy historic sites, including a century-old suspension bridge and the township of Skippers. Visit a restored schoolhouse and gain insight into the lives of gold miners through photos and relics that illustrate the everyday challenges they faced in the mines.

Continue your journey and take in panoramic views of the Wakatipu Basin. After entering Skippers Canyon, travel to Lighthouse Rock for a dramatic vista of the valley’s sheer walls and lush plant life. Follow in the footsteps of adventurers as the winding road brings you to the historic Skippers Bridge – a perfect photo opportunity.

After crossing the bridge, arrive at the long-abandoned old township of Skippers where several original buildings still stand, waiting to be explored. Pause for refreshments, then immerse yourself in the area’s history through photos and artefacts that divulge a wealth of information. The nearby cemetery alludes to the gloomy and dangerous nature of life for gold prospectors.

Stop at Deep Creek and test your luck panning for gold in one of the world’s richest gold-bearing rivers before the journey back to Queenstown, concluding with hassle-free transport back to your hotel.
