Activity itinerary

New Jersey Brigade Memorial

  • 5m
This memorial honours the New Jersey troops who served under George Washington at Valley Forge. Known as the “Jersey Blues,” these soldiers were regarded as some of the most organised and dependable troops in the Continental Army.

Redoubt Overlook Platform and Parking

  • 5m
This overlook preserves another section of Valley Forge’s defensive earthworks and offers views across the surrounding landscape. Washington’s soldiers dug trenches and raised embankments here to create protected positions in case the British attempted an attack.

Artillery Park

  • 5m
This field marks the area where General Henry Knox and his artillery were stationed during the Valley Forge encampment. Reproductions of Revolutionary War cannons help visitors picture how Washington’s artillery forces trained and prepared to defend the camp.

Maine Memorial

  • 5m
This modest monument honours soldiers from Maine who served under Washington during the Valley Forge encampment. It also recalls the challenge Washington faced in keeping troops from different colonies united through a brutal winter.

National Memorial Arch

  • 5m
By far the largest monument in the park, the National Memorial Arch honours George Washington and the Continental Army. It stands as a powerful reminder of the soldiers who endured hunger, disease, cold, and uncertainty during the winter of 1777–78.

General Wayne Statue

  • 5m
This monument honours General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, one of Washington’s commanders in the Continental Army. Wayne later became famous for his successful assault on Stony Point, but at Valley Forge he was already known for his fiery personality and determination.

Unknown Soldier Memorial

  • 5m
This memorial honours the soldiers who died during the harsh Valley Forge encampment but whose names were never recorded. It serves as a quiet reminder of the many lives lost to disease, hunger, and hardship during the winter.

Knox's Quarters, Valley Forge National Historical Park

  • 5m
This historic house contains part of the original home occupied by General Henry Knox, Washington’s trusted artillery commander. Knox rose from a Boston bookseller and militia artillerist to become one of the most important military leaders of the American Revolution.

Knox Covered Bridge

  • 5m
Built in 1851 and reconstructed after a flood in 1865, this picturesque covered bridge crosses Valley Creek near Washington’s Headquarters. Even the National Park Service notes uncertainty over whether it was named for General Henry Knox or politician Philander Chase Knox.

Delaware Memorial

  • 5m
This granite monument honours Delaware troops who served during the Valley Forge encampment. The storey here also highlights Captain Allen McLane and his men, who disrupted British supply lines and brought desperately needed provisions back to Washington’s army.

Valley Forge Train Station

  • 10m
Built in 1911 for the Reading Railway, this historic station now serves as a museum. Inside, exhibits explore George Washington’s leadership and the storey of the Continental Army at Valley Forge.

Commander in Chief's Guard Huts

  • 10m
These reconstructed huts represent the shelters used by Washington’s personal guard, known as the Commander in Chief’s Guard or Lifeguards. These elite soldiers were responsible for protecting Washington from threats both outside and within the Continental Army.

George Washington Monument

  • 10m
This monument honours the commander who held the Continental Army together through the Valley Forge winter. Washington combined military experience, leadership, and strategy to preserve his army while preparing it for the battles still to come.

Washington's Headquarters

  • 5m
Also known as the Isaac Potts House, this small stone building served as George Washington’s headquarters during the Valley Forge encampment. From here, he managed shortages, military planning, political challenges, and the daily survival of his army.

Washington Memorial Chapel

  • 5m
Completed in 1917, this active Episcopal chapel was built as a memorial to George Washington and the Continental Army. Nearby stands the Justice Bell, created to support the women’s suffrage movement and modelled on Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell.

Patriots of African Descent Monument

  • 5m
This monument honours free and formerly enslaved Black soldiers who served in the Continental Army. It highlights the important role of the First Rhode Island Regiment, one of the army’s most notable multiracial units.

Varnum's Quarters

  • 5m
This stone farmhouse served as the quarters of General James Mitchell Varnum, one of Washington’s advisors. Varnum played an important role in proposing the recruitment of enslaved Black men into Rhode Island’s Continental forces.

Philander Chase Knox Estate

  • 5m
This elegant estate was once the weekend home of Philander Chase Knox, who served as US Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Senator. Today, the property is primarily used as a wedding venue and is not open for general public access inside.
