1) The tour description:
São Paulo is the biggest city in Latin America. And yet its highest point is in the middle of a forest.
We meet at Barra Funda station and take a short ride on public transport (the ticket is included). Soon the city is behind us and the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) begins. We follow the Trilha do Pai Zé, about 3.5 km with 360 m of climbing, up to the top of Pico do Jaraguá. At 1,135 m, it is the highest point of the city. In total, we walk about 7 km. If you still have energy after the climb, we can continue through the rainforest on two shorter trails and add about 2 km more.
I come here often, and it is never the same. Some days you can hear toucans in the trees. Other days belong to the butterflies. More than 370 species of butterflies and moths have been recorded in the city, and more than 450 bird species live here. In this park alone, researchers have counted more than 100 bird species. But the animals we see most often are monkeys and coatis (quati). I will also tell you the storey of the strangler fig, a tree that starts its life high up in another tree and slowly kills its host. And many more stories from this forest.
From the top, you can see the city in every direction. On a clear day, you can also see the green hills of Serra da Cantareira.
The whole tour takes about 5.5 hours, including transport (4.5 to 6.5 hours, depending on our pace and what we see on the way). Park entry is free. The route may change because of weather or park maintenance.
