What you can expect

  • This full–day excursion brings you deep into the heart of Crete’s history, tradition and natural beauty. Travelling through picturesque countryside and charming villages, you will explore three of the most culturally significant sites in the region: Arkadi Monastery, Margarites village and the Melidoni Cave.

Your first stop is the Monastery of Arkadi, the most important and symbolic monastery on the island. Built in the 14th century, it is a masterpiece of Cretan Renaissance architecture from the period of Venetian rule. Arkadi became a universal symbol of heroism and sacrifice during the Cretan revolution against the Ottomans in 1866, and today visitors can walk through its courtyards, chapels and museum to discover the moving history preserved within its walls.

Next, you will visit Margarites, one of the most famous pottery villages in Crete. The entire settlement feels like an open–air museum, filled with ceramic workshops and artisan studios. Here, local craftsmen still shape clay using techniques that date back to the Minoan civilisation. You will watch a live demonstration, learn about traditional pottery methods and wander through the narrow streets full of handmade ceramics.

Your journey continues to the Melidoni Cave, a natural monument of great archaeological and historical importance. The cave holds significant findings from ancient times and played a tragic role during the Cretan resistance against Ottoman rule. Inside, you will admire magnificent stalactites, stalagmites and impressive natural formations that create an almost mystical atmosphere.

Before returning, you will stroll through the quiet village of Melidoni, with its narrow alleys, Venetian and Ottoman stone buildings of the 17th and 18th centuries, and a beautiful Orthodox church decorated with local craftsmanship.

This cultural and historical experience offers a unique insight into Crete’s past, blending sacred heritage, traditional artistry and spectacular nature into a truly memorable day.
