What you can expect

Follow a winding path up into the emerald-green world of Madeira's mountains, high above a deep evergreen valley. Marvel at the island's unspoiled natural beauty, crystal-clear cascading waters, and mysterious tunnels that lead you to a majestic waterfall.

Take a deep breath and inhale the eucalyptus scent as you follow your expert guide on a 3,250-feet (990-m) climb. This popular hike covers some 23 miles (37 km), following a levada (aqueduct) route from Queimadas Forest Park. Considered one of the island's most challenging hikes, this path takes you through tunnels, rocky walls and steep ascents.

Constructed in the 19th century as an irrigation channel system, the levadas now provide an extensive network of walking paths with scenic trails. Since two-thirds of Madeira is a protected conservation area, levada hiking is a great way to discover this breathtaking island.
