What you can expect
The tour starts at the Macorix Museum – House of Rum. Learn all about the production and history of the country’s most important export product, with a tasting, of course.
Along one of the city’s oldest streets, Calle 30 de Marzo and Calle Imbert, we will reach “La Chocolateria.” Here, you will learn everything about the cultivation and production of Dominican chocolate, including, of course, a chocolate tasting.
Right around the corner are the city’s most famous highlights: the all-pink “Paseo Doña Blanca” and the Street of Umbrellas.
Once you’ve taken all your photos, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase small souvenirs or gifts at Island Treasures.
We have now reached the city centre: Independence Park, with the Town Hall and San Felipe Cathedral, is a popular destination for locals, especially on weekends. We recommend simply soaking up the city life while enjoying a traditional Dominican ice cream.
From here, our route takes us to the renowned Monsenor cigar factory, where a short tour of the cigar-rolling process will give us an insight into an important tradition. Immediately afterwards, a small pedestrian area awaits our visit.
Along the high street, the waterfront promenade known as the Malecón, we will pass the popular photo spot “Puerto Plata” and continue to one of the city’s most historic sites: Fortaleza San Felipe. From the fortress, which once served to protect the city, our route takes us to the former Puerto Plata train station, which, although it was once an important transport hub, is now barely recognisable.
Our tour ends here.
