What you can expect
Located in the quiet mountainside area of Arashiyama, Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple is a hidden gem of Kyoto, home to over 1,200 unique and expressive stone Buddhist statues. Each season offers a different atmosphere, from cherry blossoms in spring and lush green scenery in summer, to vibrant autumn foliage and the peaceful beauty of winter.
This tour combines Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple with the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, offering a relaxing journey through Kyoto’s nature, history, and traditional culture.
Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple is not easily accessible by public transport, but with our comfortable private vehicle, you can enjoy a stress-free journey from Kyoto Station. During the approximately 40-minute drive, relax and take in the changing scenery as you leave the city behind and head towards the peaceful mountains of Arashiyama.
Your guide will share fascinating stories about the temple’s history, the stone statues, and Japanese culture and traditions, helping you discover the hidden charm of Kyoto beyond a simple sightseeing visit. Enjoy the unique atmosphere of this mountain temple and discover many beautiful photo spots along the way.
After exploring Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, we will take a leisurely 45-minute to 1-hour walk through the peaceful Oku-Saga area. Surrounded by nature, you will stroll through traditional streets that are part of a preserved historic district, offering a glimpse into Kyoto’s timeless scenery and way of life.
Along the way, you will pass traditional shops selling Japanese crafts, local souvenirs, and charming cafés. If you find a place you would like to visit, feel free to ask your guide for a quick stop.
The walk concludes at the iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, one of Kyoto’s most famous landscapes. Surrounded by towering bamboo and a calm, refreshing atmosphere, you can enjoy a memorable stroll through this unique natural setting.
After visiting the Bamboo Forest, your guide will escort you to Arashiyama’s high street, where the tour will end. (This is where you will say goodbye to your guide.)
After the tour, you are free to continue exploring Arashiyama at your own pace. Enjoy local restaurants, Japanese sweets, souvenir shops, and the many charming stores around the area.
