What you can expect
Uncover the Secret Craftsmanship of Sakai
Escape the crowded neon streets of central Osaka and journey just 10 minutes south to Sakai—the legendary birthplace of the samurai sword and world-class kitchen knives. For over 600 years, Sakai’s master blacksmiths and sharpeners have crafted some of Japan's finest blades. Today, Sakai knives are highly regarded by professional chefs across Japan.
Your journey begins at Sakai Station, where you will meet your bilingual guide—a proud Sakai native. Rather than following a typical sightseeing route, this experience offers a deeper, authentic look into the local lifestyle, folklore, and hidden stories of this historic port town.
A Brief Journey through Nostalgic Sakai
Our experience begins with a short walk through the historic district before hopping aboard the Hankai Tramway, Osaka's historic tram network. Riding this charming retro tram feels like stepping back in time. As the carriage rumbles through the area, your guide will point out hidden historic spots and share insider perspectives on daily life in Sakai.
Exclusive Access to the World of Sakai Knives
Next, we will step into the world of Sakai’s master craftsmen. Through local connections, you will have the opportunity to visit a carefully selected knife-related location that reveals the craftsmanship behind Sakai's renowned blades.
Depending on the day and craftsman availability, the visit may include a renowned knife showroom, a local blacksmith forge, or a historic knife archive.
Wherever we go, the focus is on discovering the authentic craftsmanship behind Japanese knife-making. You will learn about the intricate “division of labour” system that makes Sakai knives unique, understand the differences between Kanto and Kansai blade shapes, and discover what gives traditional Japanese knives their distinctive precision and character.
Personalised Knife Consultation & Engraving Demonstration
We finish with a personalised introduction to choosing Japanese knives. Your local guide will help you navigate the complex world of steel, explaining the differences between high-carbon and stainless steel, blade shapes, maintenance, and how different knives suit different cooking styles.
At selected locations and depending on availability, you may also have the opportunity to see traditional hand engraving, where a craftsman uses a hammer and chisel to carve characters into a blade—a fascinating finishing technique that adds a personal touch to Japanese knife craftsmanship.
Please note: Knives are not included in the tour price.
