The Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, is located in the centre of Beijing, China. It was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, built between 1406 and 1420, and served as the home of emperors for nearly 500 years. Covering about 720,000 square metres with over 8,000 rooms, it is the largest and best-preserved ancient wooden palace complex in the world. Today, it is a museum displaying extensive collections of Chinese art and cultural relics and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
