What you can expect
Begin your journey at Odawara Station, a convenient and modern gateway to the city. Right outside the station is Minaka Odawara, a lively complex filled with local food shops and souvenir stands. Enjoy a casual introduction to Odawara’s food culture. Try freshly made kamaboko (fish cake), traditional Japanese sweets, or seasonal snacks while getting a feel for the local atmosphere.
From there, walk towards the highlight of the city—Odawara Castle. This historic castle played an important role during Japan’s feudal era and is closely connected to the history of the samurai and the Hojo clan. The castle grounds are spacious and peaceful, making it a great place to experience both history and nature together.
Inside the main tower, enjoy exhibits showcasing samurai armour, weapons, and historical artefacts. At the top, the observation deck offers a stunning panoramic view of the city, stretching all the way to Sagami Bay on clear days. The surrounding park area is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season, but it remains scenic throughout the year.
Visit Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine, located within the castle park. This shrine is dedicated to Ninomiya Sontoku, a historical figure known for his philosophy of hard work and moral education. The peaceful atmosphere here provides a nice contrast to the castle’s historical strength, offering a quiet moment during the tour.
After exploring the castle area, continue to Kamaboko Street, one of Odawara’s most charming local areas. This nostalgic street is lined with traditional kamaboko shops, many of which have been operating for generations. Enjoy more food tasting, learn about the traditional production of fish cakes, and browse small local shops offering unique souvenirs. The atmosphere is calm and authentic, giving a glimpse into everyday life in a historic Japanese town.
Throughout the tour, there are light photography opportunities rather than a heavy focus on posed photo sessions. Odawara’s scenery naturally provides great backgrounds—castle stone walls, traditional streets, local food displays, and occasional views of the sea. The goal is to capture natural moments while enjoying the experience rather than interrupting it for formal photos.
Finish the tour back at Odawara Station, where you can pick up additional souvenirs such as dried seafood, traditional sweets, or regional specialities before continuing your journey.
