Overview

Newgrange and the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Brú na Bóinne should form the centrepiece of both tours.
Trim Castle, Monasterboice, Knowth, Dowth, the Hill of Tara, the Hill of Slane, Old Mellifont Abbey, Bective Abbey and the Battle of the Boyne should be presented under the heading “Options for the Day.”
It must be clear that it is not possible to complete an extended visit at every location during one day.
The final combination will depend on the confirmed Newgrange or Knowth admission time, guests’ interests, collection point, available time, seasonal opening hours, weather and attraction availability.
Newgrange and Knowth can only be visited through the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre.

The Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre is the starting point for all guided visits to Newgrange and Knowth. Its interactive exhibition introduces the people, archaeology, art and beliefs of the Neolithic Boyne Valley and helps guests understand the immense effort and skill involved in building the great passage tombs. Visitors with pre-booked monument tickets are transported from the centre by shuttle for their guided experience. The visitor centre also contains a café, bookshop and exhibition areas. Sufficient time must be allowed for arrival, ticket collection, the exhibition, shuttle transfers and the guided monument visit.

Newgrange is one of Ireland’s most remarkable ancient monuments, built around 3200 BC. Its passage and inner chamber are aligned with the rising sun at the winter solstice, when sunlight illuminates the chamber through the roof box. The monument’s intricate carvings and impressive scale showcase the remarkable skill and beliefs of its builders over 5,000 years ago. Entry to the passage and chamber requires a pre-booked ticket. The passage is narrow and may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility or claustrophobia. An exterior visit is also available.

Knowth Megalithic Passage Tomb

Knowth is the largest of the great passage tombs within the Brú na Bóinne complex. The principal mound is surrounded by smaller satellite tombs and an extraordinary collection of carved kerbstones. The site preserves evidence of thousands of years of human activity, extending from the Neolithic period through later settlement and medieval occupation. A guided visit provides remarkable views across the Boyne Valley and an opportunity to examine some of the finest surviving examples of prehistoric megalithic art. Knowth is visited through the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and requires a specific pre-booked tour. Access to the internal chambers is not available.

Hill of Tara

The Hill of Tara was the ceremonial and symbolic seat of Ireland’s High Kings. Its ancient landscape includes monuments dating back over 5,000 years. Guests can explore the historic earthworks, see the Mound of the Hostages and the famous Lia Fáil, or Stone of Destiny. The hilltop also offers beautiful views across the surrounding countryside and a unique connection to Irish mythology and kingship. The site is generally accessible year-round, subject to weather and ground conditions.

Slane

Situated beside the River Boyne, Slane is an attractive historic village at the heart of the Boyne Valley. Its four Georgian houses face one another around the central crossroads, creating one of Ireland’s most distinctive village layouts. Slane provides an excellent option for lunch or refreshments and serves as a natural connection between Newgrange, the Hill of Slane and the wider Boyne Valley.

Hill of Slane

The Hill of Slane rises above the surrounding Boyne Valley and commands magnificent views across County Meath. According to tradition, St Patrick lit the Paschal fire here in AD 433, directly challenging the authority of the High King at nearby Tara. The hill later became an important Christian centre. Its surviving ruins include a church, Gothic tower, graveyard and the remains of an ecclesiastical college. The combination of panoramic views, archaeology, history and legend makes the Hill of Slane one of the Boyne Valley’s most atmospheric locations.

Monasterboice Monastic Site

Monasterboice is one of Ireland’s most important early Christian sites, founded by St Boetius in the sixth century. The site features medieval church ruins, a 30-metre round tower and some of Ireland’s finest High Crosses, including the beautifully carved Muiredach’s Cross. As an unguided outdoor National Monument, visits are subject to weather, ground conditions and guest mobility.

Mellifont Abbey

Old Mellifont Abbey was Ireland’s first Cistercian monastery. Founded by St Malachy in 1142, the abbey introduced a new form of European monastic architecture and religious life to medieval Ireland. Its most distinctive surviving feature is the beautiful octagonal lavabo where the monks once washed before entering the refectory. The abbey also witnessed major moments in later Irish history. The Treaty of Mellifont was signed here in 1603, and William of Orange used the site as his headquarters during the Battle of the Boyne. A visit may include the ruins, visitor exhibition or guided experience, subject to seasonal opening arrangements. Admission to the Visitor Centre and guided tour is €5 per adult. Tickets can be purchased on site.

Oldbridge Estate/Battle of the Boyne Visitors Centre

The Battle of the Boyne was fought beside the River Boyne at Oldbridge in 1690 between the forces of King William III and the deposed King James II. Both kings commanded their armies in person during a conflict whose consequences reached far beyond Ireland, influencing the future of the British throne, European politics and religious power. The visitor experience uses displays, original objects and a detailed battlefield model to explain the people, strategy and wider significance of the battle. Guests may also explore sections of the Oldbridge Estate, its gardens and riverside walks. The extent of the visit will depend on available time, weather and current visitor-centre arrangements. The grounds and gardens are free to visit.

Bective Abbey

Standing above the River Boyne between Tara and Trim, Bective Abbey is one of the valley’s most atmospheric medieval ruins. Founded for the Cistercian Order in 1147, it developed from a place of monastic simplicity into a fortified religious complex. Its surviving cloister, Gothic arches, towers and carved stonework reveal how the abbey evolved across several centuries. The dramatic ruins have also appeared in major international productions, including Braveheart and The Last Duel. Bective may be included as a peaceful photographic and historical stop when the chosen route and available time permit.

Trim Castle

Trim Castle is the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland and one of the most impressive medieval castles in the country. Constructed by Hugh de Lacy and his successors over approximately 30 years, the castle was designed to control an important crossing point on the River Boyne and demonstrate Norman power in medieval Meath. Its monumental 20-sided keep stands behind curtain walls, defensive towers and the remains of a surrounding moat. Depending on opening arrangements and available time, guests may enjoy a guided interior experience, explore the castle grounds or admire the fortification from the riverside viewpoints. The grounds and gardens are free to visit.
