What you can expect

  • Begin your journey with a pickup from your hotel in Nagoya and drive through the mountain ranges of central Japan. Listen as your guide introduces the ancient wisdom behind the Gassho-zukuri architecture, specifically how it withstands harsh, heavy snowfalls, immersing you in the fairytale world before you even arrive.

Cross the Deai Bridge into the heart of the village. Get an up-close look at the traditional irori (sunken hearth) inside the Gassho houses and learn how ancient villagers survived the freezing winters without modern heating. Your guide will also explain the unique Yui (mutual aid) culture that kept this community alive.

Next, head to the Shiroyama Viewpoint, the ultimate photography spot. From here, capture the entire (harmoniously scattered) Gassho-zukuri village, the winding Shogawa River, and the majestic Mount Haku in the distance, securing postcard-perfect memories.

Leaving Shirakawa-go, your guide-driver will take you along a scenic mountain route to Takayama, famously known as “Little Kyoto of Hida.” Stroll along the cobblestone streets lined with wooden merchant houses dating back to the Edo period.

Your guide will point out the Sakabayashi (sugarcane balls) hanging under the eaves and share the proud sake-brewing history of the Hida region. You can also taste famous Hida beef skewers or traditional roasted rice dumplings here.

Conclude this enriching and in-depth cultural tour with a safe, comfortable private transfer back to your Nagoya hotel or designated location.
