The Shin-Hotaka Ropeway is Japan's only double-decker large-scale sightseeing ropeway. The second section features a completely transparent design, ascending vertically 1039 metres and reaching the Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station at an altitude of 2156 metres in just about 11 minutes. The upper level offers unobstructed views, making it especially suitable for photography enthusiasts and families.
From the observation deck at Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station, you can overlook the Hida Mountains, Mt. Togashi, Mt. Nagato, and the Hotaka Range, among other snow-capped mountains. On a clear day, you can even see the silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance. This attraction has been rated a two-star recommendation by the Michelin Guide Japan, meaning it's “worth a special trip.”
Nature Experiences Suitable for All Seasons
Spring/Summer: Lush greenery, with opportunities to hike the Nabehira Kogen Nature Trail (2.3 km long).
Autumn: Autumn foliage adorns the mountains and forests, making it the golden season for photography.
Winter: A blanket of snow awaits, offering the “Snow Corridor” experience—stroll through man-made snow wall walkways, build snowmen, and take photos.
A free foot bath area (Shirakaba-daira Station) is available at the summit, allowing you to relax your feet amidst the snowy scenery.
The observation deck features a café, light meals, and a souvenir shop; we recommend trying the “summit” churos or local Hida specialities.
