From the boat, look for Håkon’s Hall, built in the 1200s for King Håkon Håkonsson, and the Rosenkrantz Tower, which combines a medieval keep with a Renaissance fortress. Its strategic position at the entrance to Bergen’s harbour made Bergenhus vital for centuries. The fortress also carries scars of more recent history: in 1944, an explosives-laden cargo ship blew up in the harbour, severely damaging the fortress and much of the surrounding waterfront. Skuteviksbryggen, Bergen’s oldest quay and an authentic remnant of the city’s historic working harbour. For centuries, vessels came alongside here to load and unload goods, making the quay an important link between Bergen and the sea. From the boat, you can clearly see the historic quay surrounded by Skuteviksbodene—the traditional waterfront warehouses where goods were stored. Together, they illustrate how efficiently Bergen’s maritime trade once operated, with ships docking just steps from the warehouses. Your guide will explain the quay’s role in Bergen’s development and how this compact harbour differed from the larger merchant district at Bryggen. From your seat aboard our pontoon, look for classic wooden rowing boats, sailing vessels, small motorboats, and other historic craft—each representing a different chapter of life along Norway’s coast. Your guide will explain how these boats connected remote communities before modern roads, carrying people, mail, and goods between islands, farms, and Bergen. The vessels in the harbour may vary, making every passage slightly different.

See Old Bergen Museum from the same direction once used by nearly every traveller arriving in the city—by water. This open-air museum recreates a Bergen area from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries using 55 authentic wooden buildings, most relocated from the city centre before they could be lost to redevelopment. From our pontoon, the waterfront setting reveals why Bergen grew around the sea. Your guide will explain why the buildings were saved and how families, artisans, shopkeepers, and sailors once lived in Bergen’s narrow streets. Seen from the water, Gamle Bergen feels less like a museum and more like the old coastal town it was created to preserve.

Near Helleneset, we pause for approximately 15 minutes to haul three traditional crab pots from the coastal waters—just a stone’s throw from central Bergen. This is a close-up look at a way of life that has fed families along Norway’s coast for generations. Watch the pots rise from the seabed and discover what the sea has provided that day. Your guide will explain how the pots are baited and set, identify anything we catch, and share how local fishermen harvest responsibly. You will have excellent opportunities for photos and a closer look before the catch is either kept or returned to the sea. Because this is genuine fishing rather than a staged demonstration, every haul is different and a catch can never be guaranteed. That anticipation is part of the experience—and shows how close Bergen remains to the sea and its living coastal traditions.

The map pin identifies Laksevåg Local Museum, but our actual point of interest is nearby: Bruno, a massive World War II U-boat bunker built for the German Kriegsmarine during the occupation of Norway. Almost hidden within today’s working waterfront, Bruno is rarely included on standard Bergen sightseeing routes. Approaching by boat gives us a remarkable view of its enormous concrete facade and original submarine pens. Construction began in 1941, and the complex had seven pens, with capacity for as many as nine U-boats protected beneath a roof up to 20 feet thick. Your guide will explain Bergen’s strategic role in the Battle of the Atlantic, how German submarines were serviced here, and why the bunker made Laksevåg a target for Allied bombing. It is a powerful and unexpected reminder that Bergen’s beautiful harbour also carries a darker wartime history.

Sail beneath Småpudden, Bergen’s modern pedestrian and bicycle drawbridge across Damsgårdssundet. The bridge creates an important everyday link between the city-center side of the harbour and the former industrial waterfront and residential areas towards Laksevåg. Its opening spans can be raised for taller marine traffic, allowing the waterway to remain active while people cross above. Our luxury pontoon’s compact size and low profile let us slip beneath the bridge without waiting for it to open. This is where our route separates from conventional harbour cruises: larger sightseeing vessels cannot normally follow us into the narrow, sheltered waters beyond. Passing directly under the bridge gives every guest a close-up perspective before we continue into a part of Bergen’s inner harbour that most visitors—and most tour boats—never reach.

Although its name translates roughly as “the Large Lungegård Lake,” it is connected to the fjord and the tide. A major restoration has now removed debris and sealed contaminated sediments beneath layers of clean material, allowing marine life to return. Along the shoreline, Bergen is creating new parks, an urban beach, and places where residents and visitors can swim and enjoy the water. From the pontoon, the city opens around us while Mount Fløyen and Mount Ulriken rise above the rooftops. Reaching this unexpected urban oasis requires passing beneath low bridges, giving our small boat access to a side of Bergen that larger sightseeing vessels simply cannot enter.

As we pass Marineholmen, look for Heit Bergen Sauna floating at the water’s edge. These wood-fired saunas offer a distinctly Nordic ritual: warm up in the sauna, then cool down with a refreshing dip in the sea just a few steps away. It may sound daring—especially in winter—but many international visitors describe the hot-and-cold contrast as invigorating and one of their most memorable experiences in Bergen. We do not stop for a sauna session during the cruise, and admission is not included. Instead, your guide will point it out as a local recommendation for later in your stay. On our return, we make a brief courtesy stop at Jekteviken for guests whose cruise ship is docked in this port area. Cruise passengers may disembark here for a convenient return to their vessel without first travelling back through central Bergen. The boat remains at the quay only long enough for passengers to disembark safely. All other guests stay aboard as we continue through Bergen Harbour to the Fish Market, where the cruise concludes in the heart of the city.
