What you can expect
The tour kicks off at the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, a symbol of Guanajuato's mining, social, and economic origins. From this point, you'll learn about the close relationship between mining and the city's emergence, explaining how the wealth of the subsoil drove the formation of roads, mines, and settlements in the Sierra de Guanajuato. From here, the group heads by vehicle to the Mineral de la Luz, following old routes used since colonial times to transport minerals, supplies, and tools. During the transfer, you'll learn about the geological processes associated with the Veta Madre, the importance of silver and mercury, and the strategic role that Guanajuato played in New Spain's mining industry and later in independent Mexico.
When you arrive at Mineral de la Luz, one of the oldest mining towns in the region, you'll start the interpretive walk along the settlement's historic trails and paths. Along the way, you'll learn about the miners' harsh living conditions, the social organisation of the royal family, and the traditional extraction techniques used during the 18th and 19th centuries. You'll visit vestiges of historic mines like the Asunción Mine, where you'll learn about its importance in the early stages of exploitation and the risks of underground work, from landslides to exposure to mercury. In the heart of the old town is the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Luz, a fundamental space for the spiritual and community life of the workers, where religious festivities, popular beliefs, and the importance of faith in an environment marked by constant danger are recounted.
One of the most impressive points of the tour is the Tiro de San José, an imposing vertical structure used for the extraction, ventilation, and transport of the mineral. Here, you'll learn about its operation, colonial mining engineering, and the depths to which the barreteros descended, highlighting the enormous human effort that sustained Guanajuato's mining wealth. During the visit, the El Realejo Dam is also mentioned as a fundamental part of the hydraulic system that supplied the royal miners, explaining its historical role in supplying water for domestic and mining use, without actually walking to it.
The experience combines scenic transfers, accessible hiking, mining history, landscape interpretation, and direct contact with heritage vestiges, allowing visitors to understand the Mineral de la Luz as a living testimony to Guanajuato's historical mining, where nature, memory, and adventure intertwine at every stage of the tour.
