Mexico City’s 2 Traditional Markets: Food, Culture & Local Stories
Perfect for curious travellers, cultural foodies, and anyone who wants to experience Mexico City with all five senses.
Discover La Merced & Sonora, through the eyes of locals who grew up in the markets. This is more than a food tour it's a personal homecoming.
At CDMX MEMORIES®, our roots are in these markets. Our guides grew up eating, shopping, helping their families, and building relationships with local merchants. Some of our families have been part of this world for two or three generations. Now, we're opening the door for you to experience Mexico City the way locals do.
Three markets, three different worlds
Mercado de La Merced: Explore one of Mexico City's most iconic traditional markets, full of bustling corridors, tropical fruits, handmade antojitos, and family-run businesses that have helped feed the city for generations.
Mercado de Sonora: Discover Mexican folk traditions, medicinal plants, herbal remedies, spirituality, and fascinating cultural beliefs that remain part of everyday life.
We'll travel between the three markets using public transport, including the Metro and Metrobús, experiencing the everyday rhythm of Mexico City along the way.
Taste Mexico through its people
Visit approximately 6–8 food stalls and small, locally owned eateries to sample traditional Mexican flavours. Depending on seasonal availability, tastings may include handmade antojitos, tacos, traditional dishes, fresh tropical fruits, and Mexican drinks.
Meet the people behind the food, hear the stories behind their recipes, and discover the cultural heritage behind every bite.
Responsible tourism with a local heart
We go beyond tourist traps to support small, locally owned businesses and family-run stalls. For us, responsible tourism means connecting travellers with local communities, respecting living traditions, and helping independent merchants thrive.
