What you can expect

Experience the surreal beauty and striking contrast of Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Salt Pans on a full-day adventure that takes you deep into one of the largest salt flats in the world. This day trip offers a rare combination of dramatic scenery, unique wildlife, and cultural insight—perfect for travellers seeking something truly different from the typical safari.

The journey begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your lodge in Maun. You’ll travel eastward across changing landscapes until the open expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pan begins to unfold before you. As you approach the edge of this ancient lakebed, you’ll be struck by the vastness and silence of the environment—a land where time seems to stand still.

During the rainy season (typically November to April), this region becomes the stage for Africa’s second-largest zebra migration, as tens of thousands of zebras and wildebeests move through the area in search of fresh grazing. It’s a breathtaking sight and a photographer’s dream, with herds stretching to the horizon under the wide Botswana sky. In the dry season, the pans transform into a shimmering desert-like landscape perfect for exploring the geology, fossil beds, and unique desert-adapted species like meerkats, ostriches, and brown hyenas.

Around midday, you’ll enjoy a delicious bush lunch under a shaded acacia or at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the pans. The stillness of the area, combined with the distant calls of wildlife and birds, creates a peaceful and reflective atmosphere that’s unlike any other safari setting.

After lunch, continue exploring the fringes of the pans and nearby grasslands where springbok, oryx, and other desert species roam. Depending on conditions, the trip may also include a cultural visit to a local village or San community, offering insight into traditional desert survival and storytelling from some of the oldest cultures on Earth.

By late afternoon, you’ll begin the return journey to Maun, arriving back at your lodge in the early evening with memories of an extraordinary day in one of Africa’s most unusual and captivating landscapes.
