Even though referred to as a river, it resembles more a lagoon or estuary in structure. The Madu River water body and islands cover an area of 915 hectares, with 770 hectares consisting of open water and 145 hectares accounting for 64 small islands.

The Madu River complex is a very rich biodiverse hotspot and sensitive ecosystem with ecological significance higher than any other coastal ecosystem island-wide. The Madu Ganga or Madu River wetland is a combination of the Madu River and Randombe Lake, connected by two water channels.
