Here, we’ll start with the impressive Bartholdi Fountain by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, where you’ll hear a few fun and surprising facts about its history. We’ll also take a look at the grand Hôtel de Ville de Lyon and use this setting to introduce the basics of Lyon—its importance, history, and what makes the city unique today.

Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon

Just next to Place des Terreaux, we stop in front of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, one of the most important museums in France. We’ll learn about its fascinating history—from a former convent to a world-class museum—before taking a short stroll through its peaceful garden. This quiet moment offers a nice contrast to the lively square, before we continue our walk towards the Croix-Rousse hill.

Croix-Rousse

We continue to the Croix-Rousse hill, the historic centre of Lyon’s silk industry. Here, you’ll discover the storey of the silk workers—known as the Canuts—and learn about their daily lives and the revolts that shaped the city’s history. We’ll explore hidden traboules (secret passageways) once used by these workers, and admire the vibrant street art that reflects the neighborhood’s creative spirit today. This stop reveals a more local and authentic side of Lyon, rich in history and character.

Amphitheater of the Three Gauls (Amphitheatre des Trois Gaules)

At the Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls, we step back into Lyon’s Roman past. Here, you’ll discover Lugdunum, the ancient Roman city, and understand its importance in the Roman Empire. This site is also deeply connected to early Christianity, as we explore the storey of the first martyrs of Lyon and the events that took place here.

Fresque des Lyonnais

This impressive trompe-l'œil artwork brings together some of the city’s most important figures—from historical icons to modern personalities. We’ll take time to spot and recognise these characters while learning how Lyon has shaped—and been shaped by—its people. A fun and interactive stop that connects the city’s past and present.

Temple Du Change

This square was once the centre of the city’s financial activity, where merchants and bankers gathered during the great trade fairs. In front of the historic Loge du Change, we’ll explore how Lyon became a major European hub for commerce and banking in the 16th century.

Place Neuve Saint-Jean

Here, you’ll discover the world of the famous bouchons—traditional Lyonnaise restaurants—and learn about the “Mères Lyonnaises,” the legendary women who shaped the city’s gastronomic identity. This stop is all about food, culture, and the flavours that make Lyon the gastronomic capital of France.

La Longue Traboule

We’ll walk through this unique traboule, discovering how these secret corridors were used over the centuries—from Renaissance residents to silk workers and even during World War II. A true hidden gem that reveals the city from the inside.

Cathedrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon

The tour concludes in front of the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Here, you’ll discover the history of this remarkable cathedral and its importance to Lyon over the centuries. We’ll also take a moment to look up towards the hill of Fourvière and talk about the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, as well as the storey behind the famous Fête des Lumières. A perfect ending to the tour, bringing together history, culture, and one of Lyon’s most beautiful settings.
