What you can expect

Only in summer, our tea ceremony takes on a special seasonal form.

To welcome you during Kyoto’s warmest season, we prepare special glass tea utensils, chosen to bring a quiet sense of coolness through their clear and delicate appearance. This reflects a Japanese tradition of hospitality, where even the smallest details are thoughtfully arranged for the comfort and enjoyment of each guest.

Through the shimmering glass, the calm of the tatami room, and a freshly prepared bowl of matcha, we invite you to slow down and experience the beauty of the season through your senses.

Step inside a 100-year-old traditional Kyoto townhouse, where the scent of tatami and the quiet atmosphere invite you to leave the bustle of the city behind and feel at ease.

Your host is trained in one of Japan’s most respected schools of tea ceremony, known as Omotesenke, and will introduce you to the authentic and meditational way of preparing and enjoying matcha.

With gentle and engaging guidance, you’ll experience the mindful rhythm of the tea ceremony and prepare your own bowl of matcha. Enjoy it with a traditional sweet, taking time to appreciate the quiet moment you have created with your own hands.

Our English-speaking tea guides welcome every question as part of the experience. We believe that curiosity is one of the most beautiful ways to connect with culture. Together with guests from around the world, you’ll share a once-in-a-lifetime moment, exchanging perspectives over a bowl of tea.

The tea utensils you hold in your hands are authentic pieces handcrafted by skilled Japanese artisans. Feel their textures, shapes, and subtle details, and experience the care and craftsmanship carried within them.

After the ceremony, you can explore select handcrafted pieces to take home. These carefully crafted items can become a vessel for carrying the respect and calmness of the tea ceremony into your daily life.

We, aeru was founded 15 years ago, beginning with the creation of traditional Japanese crafts designed for children and growing with a mission to pass Japan’s spiritual heritage on to future generations.
We believe that both the objects created by skilled artisans and the moments shaped through tea ceremony have the power to bring mindfulness and kindness into everyday life.
It is our pleasure to share both these objects and these moments, along with the spirit and culture behind them, with guests from around the world. We warmly welcome you to aeru gojo, a traditional Kyoto townhouse where you can experience tea culture, Japanese craftsmanship, and heartfelt hospitality.
