What you can expect

Escape the city and discover a different side of Kyoto on this guided hiking adventure through the mountain villages of Kibune and Kurama.

Just a short journey from central Kyoto, you'll find a world of towering cedar forests, sacred temples, mountain streams, and centuries-old legends. This half-day experience combines nature, culture, history, and light adventure, making it the perfect escape for travellers looking to see Kyoto beyond its famous city sights.

Your journey begins in the charming village of Kibune, nestled in the mountains north of Kyoto. Famous for its beautiful riverside setting and spiritual heritage, Kibune has welcomed pilgrims and travellers for centuries. Here, you'll visit the historic Kifune Shrine, dedicated to the deity of water and one of the most important shrines in the region.

From there, your guide will lead you onto one of Kyoto's most scenic hiking trails. Follow forest paths beneath towering cedar trees as you gradually climb Mount Kurama, learning about the fascinating history, folklore, and spiritual traditions that have shaped this area for generations.

The hike is considered moderate and suitable for most active travellers. While there are stairs and uphill sections, the route is taken at a comfortable pace with plenty of opportunities to stop, enjoy the scenery, and take photographs.

After approximately 30–40 minutes of climbing, you'll arrive at Kurama-dera Temple, one of Kyoto's most remarkable mountain temples. Known for its peaceful atmosphere and spectacular views, the temple is considered a spiritual “power spot” by many locals. Take time to explore the grounds, admire the scenery, and learn about the unique traditions associated with this special place.

After visiting the temple, descend into the picturesque village of Kurama. Surrounded by mountains and rich in history, this quiet community offers a glimpse into a slower, more traditional side of Japan. You'll have free time to explore the village, enjoy a late lunch, or simply relax before returning to Kyoto by train.

For those looking to unwind after the hike, an optional visit to the famous Kurama Hot Spring is available. Guests who choose to visit can take advantage of a special discounted admission ticket and enjoy a relaxing soak surrounded by nature. Please note that the hot spring visit is entirely optional and not included in the standard tour itinerary.

Whether you're interested in hiking, nature, Japanese spirituality, or simply escaping the crowds for a few hours, this tour offers a refreshing and memorable experience in one of Kyoto's most beautiful regions.
