What you can expect

  • Located in the heart of Kyoto, just a 1-minute walk from Marutamachi Station, our venue is a one-of-a-kind entertainment restaurant where you can experience Japan’s national sport, sumo, up close.

Conveniently located in central Kyoto, the venue is within easy walking distance of Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. Karasuma Oike and Kyoto International Manga Museum are also nearby. Nijo Castle is a short subway ride or about 15–20 minutes on foot, while Nishiki Market, Kawaramachi, the Kamo River, and Pontocho Alley are easily accessible by subway or taxi. Famous landmarks such as Gion, Yasaka Shrine, Heian Shrine, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple are convenient to visit.

Here, tradition, excitement, humour, and audience participation come together in an unforgettable cultural experience. Whether you are visiting Japan for the first time, travelling with family, or looking for something truly different in central Kyoto, this show brings you closer to the powerful world of sumo.

The highlight is the incredible proximity to the wrestlers. No matter where you sit, you are only a few metres from the dohyo, the sumo ring. From this close distance, every moment feels real: the impact of bodies colliding, intense breathing, and sand flying from the ring. It is a level of realism you cannot experience through television or distant arena seats.

The show features experienced professional sumo wrestlers, including former Makuuchi, or top-division, performers. Their size, speed, strength, and technique create high-impact bouts right before your eyes.

Guided by an English-speaking MC, the programme is easy to enjoy even if you know nothing about sumo. You will learn how sumo developed over more than 1,400 years as both a sport and a sacred Shinto ritual. The MC explains the dohyo, ring-entering movements, customs, and kimarite techniques such as yorikiri, oshidashi, and uwatenage in a fun, accessible way.

The wrestlers also demonstrate training movements and traditional gestures such as shiko leg stomps, chiri-chozu ritual movements, and matawari leg splits. Guests who wish to participate can step into the ring and test their strength against a real sumo wrestler in a safe and entertaining guest challenge.

During the experience, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a Japanese entertainment restaurant. While watching the show, guests may separately order optional Japanese izakaya-style dishes and drinks from the menu. Food and drinks are not included in the basic experience unless specifically stated in your selected plan, so you can choose what you would like to enjoy on the day.

This is a perfect mix of culture, entertainment, audience participation, and casual Japanese dining for couples, families, groups, solo travellers, and first-time visitors.

After the show, enjoy a commemorative photo session with the wrestlers and capture a special Kyoto memory.

Please note: This is an entertainment experience, not an official professional sumo tournament.
