What you can expect

Begin your journey at Sanjūsangen-dō, a truly unique temple in the landscape of Japanese religious and cultural history. While Japanese school groups frequently visit this site on field trips, surprisingly few international travellers do — at least not as many as those who flock to Kiyomizu-dera or Arashiyama.

Step inside the temple and discover what makes Sanjūsangen-dō truly special: an astonishing 1,000 life-sized, golden statues of Kannon (the Buddhist goddess of mercy) line the interior of this long, wooden hall. These statues are arranged in tightly packed rows, stacked on five tiers, stretching across the entire length of the building.

To give you a sense of scale — the name “Sanjūsangen-dō” refers to the building’s length: 33 “ken” (an old Japanese unit of measurement), which is roughly 60 metres. At the centre of it all sits a massive, commanding statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon.

During the tour, don’t hesitate to ask your guide questions like:
– Why was such a structure built?
– Why are there so many statues?
– What’s the significance of the number 33?

This temple is sure to astonish you, spark your intellectual curiosity, and offer a glimpse into the profound depth of Buddhist thought.
