What you can expect
Your adventure begins with a hotel pickup, followed by a scenic 40–50 minute drive to a traditional mangrove village. As you arrive, the tranquil surroundings and the sight of fishing boats along the river instantly set the mood for an unforgettable evening.
From the jetty, you will embark on a charming river cruise that glides gently into the mangrove forest. The waterways are alive with nature keep your eyes open for mudskippers darting across the mudflats, colourful kingfishers perched on branches, saltwater crocodiles resting along the banks, and playful macaques swinging through the trees. The mangroves themselves form a lush green corridor, a vital ecosystem that supports countless species.
As the boat heads further downstream, the river opens towards the South China Sea, where you may be lucky enough to spot the elusive Irrawaddy dolphin, also known as the snubfin dolphin. These rare creatures sometimes surface near fishing boats, offering a magical glimpse of marine life in its natural habitat.
The journey continues through winding estuaries and mangrove channels, where the highlight is often the sighting of the proboscis monkey. With their distinctive long noses and reddish coats, they are one of Borneo’s most iconic animals, often seen lounging in the mangrove fringes. Along the way, you’ll also enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Santubong, its dramatic silhouette rising above the coastline.
As the sun begins to set, the sky transforms into shades of orange and purple. You’ll pause near Salak Village to admire the scenic sunset, a perfect backdrop for photos and quiet reflection. The calm waters mirror the colours of the sky, creating a serene atmosphere that guests often describe as the most memorable part of the trip.
When dusk falls, the real magic begins. Your guide will lead you deeper into the mangrove waterways to search for fireflies. Soon, clusters of these tiny insects light up the branches, resembling twinkling fairy lights strung across the forest. Their synchronised glow creates an enchanting spectacle, illuminating the night in a way that feels almost otherworldly. Occasionally, the eyes of crocodiles may gleam in the torchlight, adding a thrilling edge to the experience.
After this mesmerising encounter, the boat slowly makes its way back to the jetty. The cool evening breeze, the sounds of the forest, and the lingering glow of fireflies make the return journey just as magical as the start. Once ashore, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel, arriving with unforgettable memories of Sarawak’s wildlife and natural wonders.
The tour also has Morning & Mid-day session which are good for Dolphin and Monkey watching but there will be no fireflies. We will contact you once you purchase the tour.
