What you can expect
Day 1: Arrival in Gombe and Chimpanzee Trekking
Depart from Kigoma by boat. The boat journey to Gombe National Park can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the type of boat you've arranged (speed boat is faster). Enjoy the scenic views of Lake Tanganyika as you travel.
Arrive at the park headquarters in Gombe. Complete the park entry formalities, pay your fees, and be assigned a knowledgeable park ranger/guide. The rangers are essential for locating the chimpanzee families and ensuring your safety and the animals' well-being.
Your guide will provide you with a briefing on the rules and regulations for chimpanzee trekking, emphasising respectful behaviour and maintaining a safe distance from the primates.
Embark on your first chimpanzee trek into the lush forests of Gombe. The duration of the trek can vary depending on the location of the chimpanzee families. Be prepared for some hiking on potentially uneven terrain. Your guide will use their expertise to track the chimps by following trails, vocalisations, and signs of their presence.
Once you locate a chimpanzee family, you'll have the opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat for a designated period (usually about an hour). Witness their fascinating social interactions, grooming habits, and foraging behaviours. Remember to remain quiet and follow your guide's instructions.
After your chimpanzee trekking experience, you might have some time to explore the lakeshore area near your accommodation or enjoy the tranquility of the park.
Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at one of the accommodation options within or near Gombe National Park (e.g., the park's rest house or a private tented camp if available). The sounds of the forest and the lake create a unique atmosphere. dinner and overnight at kasekela tented camp
Day 2: Second Chimpanzee Trek or Other Activities and Departure
After breakfast, you'll have the option for another chimpanzee trekking experience. This provides another chance to encounter a different chimpanzee community or observe the same group in different behaviours.
Depending on your interests and the time available, you could consider other activities within Gombe National Park:
Have lunch at your accommodation or a designated picnic spot within the park. Depending on your boat schedule back to Kigoma, you'll have some more time to relax and soak in the Gombe atmosphere.
Take a boat transfer back to Kigoma. Ensure you've arranged your boat departure time in advance. Arrive back in Kigoma, concluding your 2-day Gombe adventure.
