Forging a Nation: Fort Scott in the Mid Nineteenth Century Promises made and broken! Who deserves to be free? The fight for freedom! Soldiers fighting settlers! Each of these stories is a link in the chain of events that encircled Fort Scott from 1842-1873. All of the site's structures, its parade ground, and its tallgrass prairie bear witness to this era when the country was forged from a young republic into a united transcontinental nation.

Established in 1862, Fort Scott National Cemetery is a solemn and historic resting place honouring veterans who served our nation from the Civil War through the present day. Located adjacent to Fort Scott National Historic Site, the cemetery reflects the community’s deep military heritage and longstanding role in American history. The cemetery’s peaceful grounds feature rows of white headstones, mature trees, and carefully maintained landscapes that invite quiet reflection and remembrance. As one of the oldest national cemeteries in the region, it serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of service members and their families. Today, Fort Scott National Cemetery remains an active national cemetery, cared for by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and continues to be a place of honour, respect, and gratitude.
