What you can expect

This tour is all about discovering the Street Art & Culture found across this old but youthful Precinct in the inner City!

We meet at LOCO Mexican restaurant where we provide a brief history of the development of Braamfontein since 1853 to provide context for the rest of the walk!

From there, we dive into the impact that street art has had on the area and some of the iconic works found on its walls i.e. street art has shaped the culture in Braamfontein for the past 20 years.

As we walk through the streets, we make a few stops at cool spaces that have influenced the culture in Braamfontein over the years i.e.

  • 99 Juta which is home to local street and luxury wear brands run by young South African designers
  • The Commune bookshop is a hive of Pan-African thought that sells books highlighting the ideas, histories and stories of Africa both on the continent and across the world
  • Grayscale Store and Gallery is the local Graffiti Store where local artists get their supplies from…it also hosts exhibitions on a regular basis by local graffiti artists
  • SWANK Jozi is a local brand that is very popular and well respected in the street wear scene of South Africa
  • Bantu Records with it's selection of local and international vinyls to suit your taste

Originally founded as a farm in 1853, Braamfontein developed into a thriving British middle class suburb between 1886 to 1935 before transforming again into a central hub of business from 1935 onwards - since 2003, it has slowly transformed into one of the city's coolest districts for culture and creativity!

Pick this tour and come get lost in the magic of this little neighbourhood that packs quite a lot of punch in such a small space!

NB!
On Saturdays, Braamfontein comes to life and is one the best days to visit the neighbourhood i.e. there's a mini market, a sandy rooftop with live Dj's and a cool boutique bar to provide you with ample things to do in the area!
