What you can expect
Begin your adventure by meeting your instructor in the traditional fishing area of Canela. Get equipped with a kayak, comfortable backrests, a life jacket, and a waterproof bag. Listen to a safety briefing before setting off on your journey.
Start with a gentle descent of the Guadiana River, taking in wide views of the Spanish marshlands and the elegant riverside town of Vila Real de Santo António in Portugal. Soon, the route turns into the San Bruno marshes, a true labyrinth of tidal channels.
Feel completely immersed in a wild environment filled with birdlife and the unique vegetation of Atlantic salt marshes—an ideal setting for slowing down, observing, and taking photos.
Leave the marsh behind and reach the mouth of the Guadiana, where natural beaches and a protected dune system appear, shaped by sand islands and tidal movement. Stop to rest and enjoy the coastal atmosphere.
Continue across into Portugal to the scenic Cala Ponta da Areia, a charming cove with a one‑of‑a‑kind beach bar—perfect for a drink, and (upon request) an optional lunch in an idyllic setting before paddling back to Canela.
Along the way, hear the fascinating naval history of the estuary: Tartessians and Phoenicians, Romans, Viking passages, legendary shipwrecks, and key events such as the Battle of Ayamonte (1624).
