Skanderbeg Square

We begin at Skanderbeg Square, the vibrant heart of Tirana, where the city’s history, architecture, and daily life come together. Here we explore the impressive Skanderbeg Statue, dedicated to Albania’s national hero, while explaining the importance of the square as the main gathering place of the country. Around the square we observe the monumental Palace of Culture of Tirana, home of the Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the iconic National Historical Museum, famous for its large mosaic façade that illustrates Albania’s history from ancient times to the modern era.

Et'hem Bej Mosque

We continue towards the historic Et'hem Bey Mosque, one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city, together with the nearby Clock Tower of Tirana, symbols of Tirana’s Ottoman beginnings. From here we walk along the elegant Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, designed during the Italian period in 1939

The Puppet Theatre of Tirana is one of the most charming cultural landmarks in the city. Bank of Albania The Bank of Albania, located near Skanderbeg Square, is the country’s central bank and one of the most distinctive buildings in Tirana. Built during the Italian period in the 1930s, its strong stone architecture reflects the monumental style of the time and represents Albania’s financial and economic centre.

Orthodox Cathedral of Resurrection

Is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Albania and one of the most impressive religious buildings in the Balkans. Built after the fall of communism, it symbolises the revival of religious freedom in the country. Its modern architecture, tall bell tower, and peaceful courtyard make it an important landmark reflecting Albania’s tradition of religious coexistence. House of Leaves Just across the cathedral stands the House of Leaves Museum, once the secret headquarters of the communist surveillance service. Today it is a unique museum dedicated to the history of spying, propaganda, and secret police operations during the communist era, offering visitors a powerful insight into how citizens were monitored during that time.

Tirana Memorial Park (Pass by)

We then continue through the pleasant Rinia Park, one of the most loved green spaces in the city centre, where locals gather to relax and enjoy daily life. Here we briefly stop to admire the Independence Memorial, dedicated to Albania’s independence and national identity. Crossing the small bridge nearby, we enter the grand Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, the main ceremonial boulevard of Tirana. Designed during the Italian period, its wide perspective and monumental style were inspired by the great boulevards of Rome, creating one of the most impressive urban views in the capital.

Continuing along the monumental Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, visitors experience one of the most impressive urban perspectives in Tirana. This wide ceremonial boulevard, designed during the Italian period, reflects the monumental architectural style inspired by the grand avenues of Rome. While walking along the boulevard, we observe important state buildings such as the Prime Minister's Office of Albania At the entrance of the former restricted Blloku area, we pause to explain its unique history during the communist era, when it was closed to ordinary citizens and reserved only for the political elite. Here visitors can also see a symbolic Berlin Wall Memorial piece and the former checkpoint area, which today serves as a reminder of the divisions and restrictions of the Cold War period. This stop offers a powerful contrast between the controlled past and the vibrant, open atmosphere that defines Tirana today.

Blloku (Pass by)

We then enter the vibrant Blloku district, once a forbidden zone reserved exclusively for the communist elite. Today, it is one of the liveliest areas of Tirana, full of trendy cafés, boutique shops, and bustling streets where locals and visitors mingle freely. Walking through Blloku, we share stories of life during communism, the dramatic changes of the 1990s, and how the district transformed from secrecy and restriction into a hub of modern city life.

Standing on the grand Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit, you are flanked by two faces of Albanian power. On your left is the imposing Palace of Congresses, a monumental relic of the Communist era built in the 1980s to host Party meetings, which has since been repurposed as the nation’s premier concert and event venue. Directly across the street sits the elegant Presidential Palace, the current workplace of the President of Albania, originally built as the Soviet Embassy before diplomatic ties were severed. This single viewpoint perfectly encapsulates Albania's dramatic shift from isolation to modernity, offering a fantastic photo opportunity of the country's layered history.

On the other side, we arrive at St. Paul’s Cathedral, an important Catholic landmark built in the early 21st century. Its striking façade and elegant interior provide insight into Albania’s religious revival after decades of suppression during the communist era. Here, visitors can reflect on the city’s tradition of religious tolerance and coexistence. While exploring the area, we also admire , the tallest building in Tirana.
