Gamcheon Culture Village began as a place where refugees lived in difficult circumstances in the 1950s, and to this day, it preserves the history of Busan, showing a cross-section of modern and contemporary Korean history. The area where Jagalchi Market is now located was called Nambin (南芳), meaning the southern coast. The name Jagalchi Market comes from the fist-sized pebbles that spread across the beach. There were street vendors selling seafood caught by small fishing boats along the coast around the market, which later became Jagalchi Market. During the Korean War, many people flocked to Busan and formed street vendors around the market to make a living. The coast was lined with shacks and houses centred around the Busan seafood processing plant building, and the street vendors gathered to form a market. After the Korean War, Busan City reorganized the shack village and built a building in 1969, opening Jagalchi Market in 1970. Today, Jagalchi Market is a famous attraction in Busan that many citizens and tourists visit. You can buy live seafood on the ground floor and cook it yourself at the restaurant on the second floor.
